Cyclones debut with 46-22 loss

Despite the second-half spark provided by senior Zayarye Williams at running back, the Community Christian School eight-player football team kicked off its season with a 46-22 loss at home to Southampton (Virginia) Academy.

Williams was shifted from offensive guard to running back as the result of junior running back Avery Winstead injuring an ankle during the Cyclones’ first offensive series. Williams rushed for 74 yards on 12 carries and scored ona 4-yard rush. Winstead had rushed for 23 yards on four carries.

Southampton, the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion last season and now playing in the 2-A division, utilized its running game to forge a 26-0 halftime lead.

CCS outscored the Raiders 22-20 in the second half as senior Grant Webb connected with junior Dominique Evans on a 25-yard TD pass and Webb scooted 23 yards for the other TD. Williams and junior Trent Allen each contributed a two-point conversion.

Webb led the Cyclones’ defensive effort with eight tackles, while junior Javen Pender recorded six tackles and recovered a Raiders fumble.

CCS plays at home at 7 p.m. next Friday against Parrott Academy of Kinston. Parrott is the reigning NCISAA 2-A champion.

Score by quarters:

Southampton 18 8 8 12 — 46

CCS 0 0 8 14 — 22
