CCS loses to St. David's
From staff reports
It proved to be a short night for the Community Christian School eight-player football team Friday night —and not in a good way.
Visiting Raleigh St. David’s School rolled to a 42-0 first-half lead, triggering the running clock for the start of the second half in a 50-30 Cyclones loss.
CCS, playing out of the split Colonial Carolina Conference, dropped to 2-2 overall as a 1-A member of the league, while St. David’s represents the 2-A CCC ranks.
“I thought we were flat,” CCS head coach Andy Jackson lamented. “We gave up an opening drive touchdown then fumbled the kickoff.”
That sequence of events served to stagger the Cyclones, who fell behind 14-0 after one quarter. The 42-0 run from St. David’s to open the proceedings was interrupted only by junior quarterback Grant Webb’s 20-yard scoring strike to senior Spensir Heath.
CCS scored 24 points once the running clock was instituted, trailing 50-14 after three quarters on a 2-yard run by senior Bryson Barefoot. Webb added the 2-point conversion.
The Cyclones pulled closer in the fourth quarter, using a 54-yard pass from Webb to junior running back Ricky Fuller. Webb capped the scoring with another 2-point conversion after scampering in on a 20-yard run
Heath finished with three receptions for 78 yards, while the Cyclones were guilty of an interception and a pair of lost fumbles.
CCS will travel to Jackson’s old team next week when it travels to 2-A Rocky Mount Academy.
