HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Statesville Christian makes big statement in win over Metrolina Christian
NDIAN TRAIL – The Statesville Christian football team made a statement in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Associaiton (NCISAA) with a convincing 49-0 beating of perennial playoff contender Metrolina Christian on Friday night.
The Warriors (0-2), who last week dropped a 34-32 decision to No. 1 ranked Concord First Assembly, were simply overwhelmed by the second-year program from Statesville Christian.
A balanced attack for the Lions (2-0), led by quarterback Brennan Settle, running back Canaan Cox and receiver Hazien Campbell, saw the team score on every single possession in the first half while holding Metrolina Christian to just one first down on the way to a 35-0 halftime lead.
Cox, who has 206 yards and six touchdowns in two games, scored first from 35 yards out. Settle, who was 7 of 8 for 141 yards on the night, hit Campbell on two fades from 14 and 21 yards for a decisive 21-0 opening quarter.
The only thing that could slow down the Lions attack in the second quarter were themselves as holding calls stalled the offense. But big plays from Settle and Cox, along with scoring runs by Sharod Phelps and Tavi Linney, helped Statesville Christian gain a 35-0 halftime advantage.
Settle led another drive in the third quarter, finished by Phelps, to go up 42-0 and sophomore quarterback Charlie Jacobs finished the final drive of the night with an option to Phelps for his second rushing TD. Kicker Dylan Sutton added his seventh extra point to go perfect on the night.
The Lions defense, behind Alex Wilson, Devin Lackey and BJ Lomax, was just as impressive holding the Warriors to only five first downs. Deshon Holmes and Cole Cameli each had an interception.
The Lions are in action next Friday at home against Pine Lake Prep (1-1).
