Statesville Christian continued its run toward an undefeated season, scoring 49 points and holding SouthLake Christian scoreless.

All that was in doubt? Whether Statesville Christian would get the shutout.

The only promising SouthLake Christian scoring drive stalled at the end of the game and Kevan Coyle’s 39-yard field goal attempt as time expired fell short.

The Lions walked off the field with a dominant 49-0 victory Friday, the night when 12 seniors encountered the final regular-season home game of their careers.

“It’s great to be out here playing for these seniors on senior night,” said junior defensive back/receiver Cole Camelli, who caught a pair of touchdown passes to complement a stellar defensive effort.

Quarterback Brennan Settle completed 14 of 25 passes for 153 yards with five touchdowns to four different receivers, and the defense played lights out.

Backup quarterback Charlie Jacobs hooked up with Camelli for a 23-yard TD strike late in the third quarter, stretching the Lions lead to 42-0 and bringing the running-clock, mercy rule into play.

NOTHING DOING

SouthLake Christian netted 60 offensive yards on 48 plays. Statesville Christian’s defense sacked quarterback Bailey Jones on nine occasions and intercepted him three times.

“Our DBs knew we had to play tight man coverage,” Camelli said. “The defense locked it down. The offense put up points. Great game.”

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Settle was named the Farm Bureau offensive player of the game. The Farm Bureau defensive player of the game went to Camelli. He recorded two first-half interceptions, the first of which he returned 32 yards to set up the Lions’ second of three first-quarter touchdowns. Camelli also had a tackle for loss.

OTHER NOTABLES

Statesville Christian senior linebacker Sharod Phelps registered a game-high three sacks. B.J. Lomax added a pair of sacks, the latter of which forced the longer field goal try at the end of the game.

Quadravis Parks hauled in a 42-yard TD reception and also picked off a pass on defense.

Deshon Holmes boosted his team-leading touchdown reception total to 13 thanks to scoring catches of five and three yards.

UP NEXT

Statesville Christian (9-0, 4-0) visits High Point Christian in next week’s regular-season finale, which will determine the Piedmont Athletic Conference champion. The Lions are seeking their first conference title in the program’s three-year history. It’s their first year affiliated with a conference.

The Lions are the defending NCISAA Division III state champions. High Point Christian won the 2016 NCISAA Division II state title.
