Statesville Christian overcomes mistakes, routs Asheville School

Statesville Christian (5-0) stayed perfect with a 53-7 victory over Asheville School (3-2) on Friday night.

The Lions jumped off to a quick start scoring on their first three drives, all of which began in enemy territory. They used their field position advantage to take an early 19-0 lead, but their offense sputtered going into halftime.

Despite the slow end to the half, the Lions were quick to score out of the locker room. Jamie Turner’s first of his two third quarter TD runs came less than a minute into the second half, a 39-yard run that boosted Statesville Christian to a strong, 34-point second half. Turner finished with 154 yards and 2 TDs on 16 carries.

Brennan Settle, the Lions’ senior QB, threw for 192 yards and 3 TDs, adding 77 yards and 2 TDs on the ground, for an impressive 5 TD performance, leading a Statesville Christian offense that easily eclipsed 300 yards on the night. Settle gave credit to his offensive line and noted some important halftime changes that led to the big performance on offense.

“The coaches did a great job of preparing us and the offensive line did a great job. They were blitzing a lot and we were able to get the ball out quick on those passing TDs,” Settle said. “Everybody was just clicking in the second half.”

Statesville Christian head coach Angelo Cox, while happy about the second half performance, was not pleased with the first half nor the 10 penalties the Lions racked up during the game.

“We started out very rough, we were trying to do some different things and they didn’t work out but we made some second half adjustments,” Cox said. “The penalties are unacceptable. We’ve got kids with high GPAs and we are having 10,15 penalties a night. It’s unacceptable, it’s embarrassing. That’s not what our culture is about and we’ve got to fix it. We are 5-0 but we have a lot of work to do.”

Statesville Christian’s notoriously strong defense was strong again, forcing five turnovers - four of them interceptions. They allowed less than 200 yards and 7 points, two weeks after holding Charlotte Latin to 3 points.

The Lions open up conference play next week traveling to Christ the King. Cox wants his team to play the rest of the season like each game is the last one.

“We have to take next week’s game like it’s a championship game. Every Friday that is our mentality and nothing less from this point on,” Cox said.
