For the second week in a row, Statesville Christian put the game out-of-reach for their opponent.
After drumming Fayetteville Christian 67-0 in the season opener, the Lions again put on a powerful offensive performance Friday, finishing off Northside Christian, 50-0 on the road.
SCS Coach Angelo Cox described quarterback Brennan Settle as nothing short of brilliant, racking up a seven for 10 passing performance and amassing 126 yards with four touchdowns. He also rushed for 89 yards on five carries in the first half. Deshon Holmes continued his two touchdown per game average and caught three passes.
Jamie Turner, who transferred from Statesville, is starting to turn heads, averaging 12 yards per carry in the two games so far, Cox said. Turner capped off the night with 114 yards on 12 carries and he scored two touchdowns.
One of the offensive highlights in a night full of them, Cox said, was Cole Cameli’s grab for the first touchdown in the first quarter.
Ray Ray Parks and Logan Mosley also made couple of exciting grabs along the sidelines, Cox said.
Sophomore Rakim Tshiona made an exciting grab near the end zone and scored on the play. He also had an interception on defense.
The Lions defense was anchored by senior Sharod Phelps and Kevin Dewalt, who both made vicious hits throughout the night, Cox said. Casey Zarybynicky and Devin Lackey also contributed to the Lions’ stance. They were in the Knights’ backfield all evening, Cox said.
Under strong defensive pressure, the Knights’ offense was limited to well below 100 yards.
Cox said this performance was nothing short of what he proclaims as his mission of giving God your best effort in football and nothing less.
He said Lions built up a 42-0 lead by the end of the first half, which resulted in a running clock for the remainder of the game.
Cox said the strong start for the Lions will be needed next week as they face their toughest opponent thus far into the young season. The Lions will face the Metrolina Christian Warriors. The Warriors are just as potent on offense, having put 111 points on the board in two games.
They have a strong running back that will present a challenge to the Lions’ defense, Cox said.
Ishod Finger ran for 312 yards in Friday’s game against Union Academy.
The Lions will host the Warriors at 7 p.m. Friday.
