APA rolls past Grace Christian on Senior Night

A long layoff didn’t affect Arendell Parrott much.
The Patriots defeated Grace Christian 63-28 Thursday to remain undefeated on the season. APA (7-0) hadn’t played since Oct. 1, but forced a running clock against the Eagles (1-5) who won their prior game 51-0 over St. David’s Oct. 8.
In the Patriots’ four home games, the team has defeated opponents by a combined score of 215-54 and forced running clocks in all of them.
“The guys practiced hard over the last two weeks, we came out as sharp as ever and we’re ready to keep the train rolling,” APA coach Matt Beaman said.
Caleb Sanderson started the game for the Patriots and finished a nine-play, 49-yard opening drive with a touchdown pass to Cole Howard. Three plays later though, Sean McDowell found an open receiver in Sawyer Adams for a 61-yard score.
The Grace Christian lead lasted for just 12 seconds as Sanderson found Paxton Riley on a long touchdown pass. Sanderson and Riley would connect again and one play after a Hodges Manning interception, Morgan McPhaul punched it in from two yards to cap off a 30-point first.
“Working with the first team this week really helped me,” Sanderson said.
APA took a 36-14 lead into the break, and Grace Christian answered two plays into the third quarter with a long touchdown run from McDowell. Cole Dawson fired back two plays later, finding Lynch for his third touchdown. The tide would turn in another three plays, as APA’s Garrett Gilgo caught a deflected pass and raced 76 yards into the end zone to put the Patriots ahead 49-20.
“I saw the ball go up, I took it and just had fun with it,” Gilgo said. “It was a good game and a way to cap off our last home game (of the regular season.)”
A second McPhaul touchdown run and a long touchdown for Cole Howard after a screen pass from Dawson forced the running clock midway through the third.
“This really helped us get homefield advantage for the playoffs, and an undefeated season would be a big accomplishment,” APA center Matthew Radford said.
Radford is one of 13 seniors on this season’s roster, along with Dawson, Gilgo, Howard, Manning, Jack Dacey, Stewart Hardee, Noah Miller, Thomas Newhall Michael Outlaw, Wyatt Powley and Marshall Taylor. The seniors were honored in a ceremony prior to kickoff.
The Patriots’ last game of the regular season is at John Paul II Oct. 29
