Senior running back Melvin Briggs II rushed for 350 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead undefeated Raleigh St. David’s to its ninth consecutive win, 46-22, over Rocky Mount Academy.
Despite the loss, the Eagles (6-3) remain in good shape to claim a berth in the NCISAA playoffs, which begin in two weeks.
RMA coach Terrell Hudgins was encouraged by his team’s attitude and effort against the powerful Warriors.
“I’m proud of our guys for fighting,” Hudgins said. “We lost some guys during the course of the game that were unable to return…all I ask is for my guys to continue to fight, and that’s exactly what they did.”
Cast in the unfamiliar role as underdog, the Eagles hung in during the first half playing solid defense and controlling the ball to keep the St. David’s offense off the field.
A 22-yard touchdown run from Eagles’ fullback Tyson Jones cut the Warriors lead to 16-6 with just 1:28 to go before halftime.
It only took one play for St. David’s to reclaim the momentum, as Briggs dashed 67 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 24-6 at halftime.
Briggs showcased his big-play ability again early in second half taking a pitch and sprinting 86 yards for a touchdown to give the Warriors (9-0) a commanding 30-6 advantage.
“They (St. David’s) can really wear you down,” said Hudgins. “They have a couple of guys that can run the ball, but obviously having Briggs is big for their team. We did a good job overall…we just have to do a better job of limiting their big plays, and it’s a completely different ballgame.”
The Eagles (6-3) refused to go away quietly scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns on a 92-yard kickoff return by Jared McCall and a 20-yard pass from Kyle Holland to Paul King.
“We came out and showed great heart and great effort (Friday),” Holland said. “This game gives us a lot of motivation for the rest of the season…we need to work on some things and get ready for the playoffs.”
RMA closes out its regular season Friday night at Halifax Academy.
