Village pulls upset for shot at state title

GARNER — Emery Simmons passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Village Christian to a 33-26 upset of unbeaten and top-seeded Wake Christian in the NCISAA Div. III state semifinals Friday night.
Village (6-5) will visit 112 Statesville Christian next Friday for the state championship. Statesville downed a homestanding Village 48-27 on Oct. 7.
“It’s hard to beat a football team twice in the same year,” first-year Village coach Russell Stone of his team’s two playoff wins, adding, “Our guys just keep getting better and better, and me as a coach getting to know these players and where to put them.”
The Knights secured Friday’s win when freshman ChaVon Mceachern intercepted a pass in the end zone on the final play of the game.
Simmons threw touchdown passes of 90 and 31 yards and ran 29 yards for a score.
