EIGHT-PLAYER FOOTBALL
CCS suffers first loss at Wayne Christian
GOLDSBORO — The Community Christian School eight-player football team got off to a good start Friday night in its North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II game against Wayne Christian, but the host Eagles responded to an early Cyclones TD with 46 unanswered points to set the tone for a 70-36 decision.
The Cyclones (1-1) struck first with junior Landon Beamon’s 33-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Jacob Harper. Beamon added the two-point conversion, and CCS led 8-0 just 1:29 into play.
However, Wayne Christian, which is not eligible for the Div. II championship due to using homeschool players, struck back with the use of explosive plays. Five of Wayne Christian’s six first-half TDs were 50 yards or more as the Cyclones trailed 46-8 at halftime.
CCS’s offense picked up after halftime, with bruising junior Graham Norville scoring on a pair of 9-yard TD runs in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Beamon plunged in from two yards out and connected with Harper for a 20-yard TD with four second remaining.
Beamon, in the absence of sophomore quarterback Noah Pierce, ran 27 times for 141 yards and a score. He completed 10 of 29 passes for 200 yards and a pair of scores, throwing three interceptions. CCS was stymied on fourth down, going just 1 for 7.
Beamon also led the defense with five tackles as Harper used his 6-foot-4, 285-pound frame to snag eight receptions for 157 yards.
CCS will host Belhaven Pungo Christian on Friday, Oct. 30.
