Winston-Salem Prep topples Statesville Christian

Winston Salem Prep defeated Statesville Christian, 28-15, Friday night at Carl Eller field at Atkins High School.
The Phoenix (2-2) used a strong rushing attack to outlast the Statesville Christian (0-5) defense, totaling 277 yards on the ground. Senior Jacob Cobbs led all W-S Prep rushers with 103 yard on 13 carries and one touchdown.
W-S Prep coach Lamont Scales credited his depth in the backfield for his team’s success.
“It really helps because we want to get our better players the ball, and we’re fortunate to have more than one,” Scales said. “We just need to go back to the drawing board to figure out a way to evenly distribute the ball.”
Winston-Salem Prep quarterback John Leecost added two rushing touchdowns, totaling 66 yards on the ground while completing just two passes for 30 yards.
W-S Prep saw its lead shrink momentarily in the fourth quarter after Statesville Christian’s kicker Simon Wilding made a 33-yard field goal to pull within five points at 20-15 with 7:16 remaining.
W-S Prep answered on its ensuing possession with a crucial fourth-down conversation on a 5-yard pass from Leecost to Reggie Greer. Two plays later, running back Shariff McQueen put the game away with a 68-yard touchdown.
“We had too many mistakes,” Scales said, “But I told the kids before the game that we were going to have to go through obstacles before we got any opportunities, and we were able to take advantage and come out with a good win.”
