It wasn’t always pretty, but the end result was picture perfect for the North Wilkes girls’ basketball
team Wednesday night at Atkins High School. The top-seeded Vikings defeated No. 2 Forsyth Country Day 50-38 in the championship game of the Mary Garber Holiday Tip-Off Classic’s Champion bracket.
Trailing for the majority of the first half and losing by as many as seven points midway through the third quarter, North Wilkes and coach Stevens Phillips ended the game on 25-6 run over the final 10 minutes to secure the title.
“We didn’t play great early, but I think our defense really improved in the second half, which is really where it all starts for us,” Phillips said. “Our defense was able to step up the intensity there in the third and fourth quarters, and that made it a lot easier for us to start converting on the offensive end.”
The Vikings (3-0) were led by junior point guard Victoria Young, who scored a game-high 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting, which includeda 2-of-3 mark from behind the 3-point line. Young, who also went 5 of 6 from the free-throw line down the stretch to ice the game, was awarded with the Most Valuable Player honor for the Mary Garber’s Champion bracket.
“I thought Victoria was huge for us,” Phillips said. “She really got us going when I thought we were just kind of going through the motions — both offensively and defensively.”
It was a struggle early for North Wilkes, which scored just six points in the first quarter and made just two of its first 15 shots. The game turned around midway through the third quarter, however, when the Vikings went on a 13-0 run that turned a seven-point deficit into a 38-32 lead with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Forsyth Country Day (4-1) made just 24 percent (13 of 54) of its field goal attempts for the game, which included a second half in which the Furies made just six shots from the floor.
“We just didn’t take care of the ball like we normally do,” coach Ronnalee Terry of FCD said. “I don’t know if it was nerves or what, but it seemed like every possession late in the second half we kept turning the ball over and couldn’t get out of our own way.”
