After taking a year off due to a lack of interest and waning numbers, Wayne Christian School will field an eight-man football team this fall.
First-year head coach Luis Miranda said the team made up of students from Wayne Christian and homeschooled students have been participating in summer workouts and drills.
The Eagles started playing football in 2015. A year later, the Eagles made an appearance in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 8-man playoffs.
Eight-man football has the same rules and procedures as 11-man football. However, the main difference with eight-man football is the width of the field, which decreases from 55 to 40 yards, and five players must be on the line of scrimmage.
The Eagles will play seven games this season. They kick off their season on Aug. 16 against Quality Education Academy. The Eagles have three home games this season, Sept. 6 against Lawrence Academy, Sept. 20 versus Bethel Christian Academy and Oct. 4 against Halifax Academy.
Miranda said after having a year off, he is glad to see football back at Wayne Christian and wants to make sure the players have a positive experience playing football.
Miranda said the object of bringing back football was to allow kids the chance to play the sport they love and to teach leadership qualities.
