At this rate, first-year West Virginia quarterback Will Grier is going to literally toss himself into the Heisman conversation.

On the same day that 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson riddled North Carolina’s defense with 525 total yards and six touchdowns, Grier, a former national high school player of the year at Davidson Day School, lit up East Carolina. Grier’s father, Chad, was a former backup quarterback at East Carolina in the late ’80s.

Grier spearheaded a 56-20 home blowout of East Carolina Saturday, completing 19-of-25 passes for 352 yards and five touchdowns. Grier didn’t play the fourth quarter.

In his first two games, Grier has completed 50-of-78 passes for 723 yards and eight touchdowns. Grier has rushed 15 times for 58 yards.

For comparison, Jackson has 771 yards passing, 239 yards rushing and eight total touchdowns in two weeks.

Everyone talking about Lamar Jackson for Heisman again but have you seen will grier's stats ? just as good #WVUFootball

Grier made his first home start Saturday, since transferring from Florida, and he started fast. He threw four first half scoring passes as his team built a 49-3 first half lead.

It was the highest-scoring first half for the Mountaineers since they scored 49 points in a 70-33 Orange Bowl win over Clemson following the 2011 season.

In all, Grier found seven different receivers.
