Former Gaston Day basketball standout declares for NBA Draft
Nate Hinton is ready to check off another one of his life goals.
Already living the dream, former Gaston Day basketball standout Nate Hinton has his eyes on a new goal.
The 6-5, 210-pound Gastonia native announced Sunday night via Twitter he intends to enter his name in the 2020 NBA Draft.
“After much prayer and discussion with my family and coaches, I have decided to enter my name in the 2020 NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility,” he said. “I am thankful to God for this phenomenal opportunity.
“I want to thank (University of Houston basketball coach) Kelvin Sampson, the entire coaching staff, my teammates, Coug Nation and the great city of Houston for your love and support.”
The former local standout continued his upward progression as a sophomore, averaging 10.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for Houston. During a Dec. 11, 2019, matchup with University of Texas-Arlington, he scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, knocking down four 3-pointers in the contest.
Houston finished the 2019-20 season with a 23-8 mark, seemingly destined for another NCAA Tournament appearance before the season was cut short due to the current coronavirus pandemic.
″“I really believe we as a team were really starting to find our groove,” he recently said. “We really felt we were going to shock some people.
“It’s like all other circumstances, you come to grips with it and move on. It’s tough, but you make the most of that lesson and keep moving.”
Before leaving, he picked up two more honors. Hinton was recently named to an All-American Athletic Conference second team performer, in addition to being recognized on the National Association of Black Coaches’ All-District 24 first team.
