Josh Nickelberry leaving the Louisville basketball team
ByJODY DEMLING 105 minutes agoUniversity of Louisville sophomore Josh Nickelberry, who was injured for much of this past season, is transferring from the program.
The 6-foot-4 Nickelberry has put his name into the transfer portal and would have three seasons left at another school.
The first high school commitment of the Chris Mack-era at Louisville, Nickelberry played in just 24 games during two seasons with the Cardinals and scored just 37 points. He came in known as a shooter but hit just 9 of 39 from three-point range during his time at U of L.
The native of Fayetteville, N.C., struggled to get on the floor as a sophomore. He had offseason surgery to repair the meniscus in his knee and missed the first five games because he was dealing with a setback following the surgery. Nickelberry then missed more time later in the season because of an illness and wrist injury.
"Josh has been through a lot the last year and a half," teammate Samuell Williamson said during this season. "He has had a few injuries that I am sure has been tough for him."
Nickelberry was the first high school commitment for Mack at Louisville and was the first in the six-man Class of 2019. Nickelberry made his first trip to U of L’s campus in mid-May and then after he committed made an unofficial visit and official visit to check out the campus again back in September.
As a senior at Northwood Temple, Nickelberry averaged 26.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists a game and finished with 2,904 points for his career.
