Adelekun becomes second Gaston County athlete to commit to play athletics in the Ivy League this year
Gaston Day School’s Demilade Adelekun announced Friday via Twitter that he has committed to play basketball at Dartmouth of the Ivy League.
Spartans coach Trent McCallister confirmed Adelekun’s commitment, saying the 6-foot-8 forward chose the Big Green over UNC-Asheville.
Adelekun also considered Ivy League schools Princeton and Cornell, as well as Wofford of the Southern Conference.
“It’s just the best opportunity for him to pursue his passion of basketball and earn an Ivy League education,” McCallister said of Adelekun. “It’s just an incredible opportunity that he values and his family values.”
Adelekun played at Highland Tech as a freshman before spending the last three seasons at Gaston Day, where he helped the Spartans to 66 wins and three state playoff appearances.
He averaged 20.0 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game last season to earn N.C. Independent Athletic Association all-state honors as Gaston Day went 16-7. Adelekun also finished his high school career with 1,650 points.
“From our perspective at Gaston Day, it’s a rare opportunity to have someone who is a Division I talent on the basketball court but is equally talented in the classroom,” McCallister said.
Adelekun becomes the second local athlete to commit to an Ivy League school this year. Hunter Huss football standout Marcus Mauney committed to Yale earlier this year.
