The Spartans avenged their loss in last season’s title tilt.
This time around, second place wasn’t enough for Gaston Day.
A bridesmaid twice before - runners-up in 2014 and 2018 - the Spartans claimed their first NCISAA 2A state championship on Saturday, defeating Hickory Christian 2-1. The victory was sweet redemption for Gaston Day, this after losing a year ago in the state final to Fayetteville Christian.
Gaston Day’s boys soccer team finishes with a 16-3 mark.
It also softened the blow from earlier in the day, when Gaston Day’s quest for a championship fell short against Davidson Day.
The Patriots claimed the title courtesy of a 26-24, 25-19, 25-17 result. It is the second straight season in which Gaston Day fell in the championship game, losing to Fayetteville’s Freedom Christian Academy.
The Spartans’ volleyball squad ended the season with a 33-6 record.
