By Rodd Baxley Staff writer FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER

Behind the energy of Iyonnah Council and the steady scoring of Lavariah Armstead, Trinity Christian’s girls’ basketball team earned a 56-48 win over Fayetteville Christian on Friday night.

In a game that featured the top two teams in the NCISAA Sandhills Conference, the Crusaders (10-2, 4-0) snapped a five-game losing streak against the Warriors (9-2, 3-1), who swept the league titles last season, to take control of the conference race.

“We came out and did what we planned,” said Trinity coach Charles Tubbs. “I’m proud of them. Hopefully, it’ll build more confidence for the girls.”

Armstead scored a gamehigh 16 points for Trinity, scoring seven points in the first quarter, and Council keyed an 18-8 second quarter that helped the Crusaders take a 30-22 lead into halftime. Freshman Aunyah Teague contributed 12 points.

But the Warriors didn’t go quietly. Senior captain Noni Russell, who scored a team-best 16 points, helped Fayetteville Christian rally from a double-digit deficit with a 16-10 advantage in third quarter, and she tied the game with a layup early in the final period.

Le’Asia Matthew tallied 13 points and Lillie Robinson scored 10 to round out the Warriors in double figures.

BIG-TIME PERFORMANCE

Iyonnah Council, Trinity Christian The junior, who started her career at Overhills, had what seemed like endless energy throughout the night. That motor was on full display in the second quarter as she keyed an 18-8 period for the Crusaders, scoring six points and dishing out a pair of assists. She finished with 10 points and a slew of assists for Trinity.
