Over a span of eight minutes, Trinity Christian’s girls’ basketball team showed its strength.

After a sluggish first half, the Crusaders used a sensational third quarter to run away from Northwood Temple in a 67-32 victory on Friday night in a NCISAA Sandhills Conference matchup.

Trinity scored 24 points in the first half and led by seven at halftime. The Crusaders scored 29 in the third period, limiting the Eagles to four points in those eight minutes to build a 32-point lead.

“We went through Raleigh (over the break) and played some tough competition,” Trinity coach Charles Tubbs said.

“I felt like we were playing down to our competition (on Friday) and we just wanted to boost it up a little bit.”

Tubbs got what he wanted out of the break, with junior Lavariah Armstead leading the charge. She scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the third quarter to power the Crusaders (9-2, 3-0).

Armstead, Trinity’s leading scorer, said the halftime message was to “keep pushing and just keep going.”

Desiree Smith aided that effort with eight of her 18 points in those eight minutes and Iyonnah Council tallied 12 to round out the Trinity players in double figures.

Danauje Brooks scored 13 points to lead the Eagles (9-3, 1-1), who already have surpassed their win total from last season.

Now, the Crusaders get to face Fayetteville Christian next Friday. The Warriors, who have won five straight in the series, earned an 18-point win against Trinity to win the Sandhills Conference tournament last season.

Tubbs said his team will need to “come out with a dog in them and come out ready to play.”

“That’s all we gotta do,” he said.

Armstead, who remembers seeing the Warriors sweep the conference titles last season, didn’t shy away from the expectations surrounding the matchup.

“This is big because they beat us last year,” she said. “We’ve got to redeem ourselves.”
