Wayne Country Day topples Wayne Christian

It didn’t really matter what Wayne Christian did on offense.

Wayne Country Day played great, pressure defense, and the Eagles simply could not get good looks at the basket.

Wounded early into Tuesday night’s game, Wayne Christian never recovered and lost 62-21. The Chargers improved to 15-2 overall, while the Eagles dropped to 7-6 overall.

“This is our second time playing Wayne Christian, so we knew what to expect,” said Wayne Country Day head coach Maurice Jones. “In this game, we wanted to work on all of our offensive sets and our press.

“The game pretty much went the way we expected it to go.”

Four different Chargers combined for 17 points in the first quarter. Wayne Country Day held a 17-5 edge after the opening quarter.

By halftime, the deficit ballooned to 34-14. The Chargers forced more than 10 turnovers in the first half.

“We play a frantic pace, and sometimes it looks out of control,” said Jones, regarding his team’s defense. “What we aim to do is to create steals and deflections, so we press hard, and we let our offense come from our hard defense.”

The Chargers did a great job all night of getting to the basket, and it became clear that the Eagles had no answers.

Jala Holloman scored four points in the third quarter and six more in the fourth quarter. The senior guard finished with a game-high 22 points. Wayne Country Day’s lead never dipped below 24 points in the second half.

Lexi Jeffreys finished the night with 16 points, Jakea Brunson and Sherica Cox each scored six points, and Langley Barnes added four points.

Abi Harrelson led Wayne Christian with nine points.

“We practice all of our plays every practice to make sure we have continuity coming from our bench,” Jones said. “The girls know the plays, and when they run them they usually work.”
