The dominoes have delivered high school recruit Jaylon Gibson to the North Carolina State men’s basketball team.
Gibson, a 6-foot-11 power forward who previously signed with Wake Forest, committed to the Wolfpack on Thursday, a move between in-state Atlantic Coast Conference rivals that became the product of circumstance.
He reconsidered when Wake Forest fired former coach Danny Manning on April 25, and gained a release from his national letter of intent.
N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts then had a scholarship spot open up last week as highly regarded recruit Josh Hall decided to remain in the NBA Draft pool and sign with an agent, thus forgoing his college eligibility.
Gibson supplied 16 points and 11.1 rebounds per game during this past season while helping Grace Christian School of Raleigh to a 21-12 record. He’s viewed as a three-star forward prospect by the 247Sports composite rankings and is rated as the No. 14 recruit in the state.
ACC schools Louisville, Syracuse and Miami expressed interest when Gibson changed course with Wake Forest and re-opened his recruitment. Maryland, Iowa and Houston also inquired.
Wake Forest made Steve Forbes its new coach last week, a hiring that didn’t reel in Gibson and return him to the Demon Deacons.
Though not valued on the same level as the 6-9 Hall — the No. 2 prospect in North Carolina and a top 50 recruit nationally — Gibson’s addition provides a measure of insurance for N.C. State should forward DJ Funderburk keep his name in the draft after testing the NBA waters. The 6-10 Funderburk averaged 12.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this past season as a junior.
Gibson joins four other incoming freshmen signed to play for the Wolfpack. That group includes Greensboro Day School guard Cam Hayes, Moravian Prep guard Shakeel Moore, Apex Friendship forward Nick Farrar and center Ebenezer Dowuona of Newnan, Ga.
