Wall injured but Lady Knights hang on to beat Cape Fear Christian, 42-38

ERWIN — Despite the loss of leading scorer and rebounder Kaelyn Wall early in the second half with an ankle injury, the visiting Greenfield School varsity girls basketball team pulled out a 42-38 triumph against Cape Fear Christian in North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Associaition 1-A competition Tuesday night.

Wall, a senior, exited with some two minutes elapsed in the third quarter when a Cape Fear player fell on her leg. The Lady Knights owned an 8-point lead at the time.

The Lady Knights entered the fourth quarter clinging to a 31-29 margin, but Cape Fear tied the score at 33-33.

Greenfield and the Lady Eagles traded a couple of baskets until Greenfield rebounded a Cape Fear miss and built a winning margin at the foul line — where eighth grader Serenity McNair nailed 7-of-10 free throws the last quarter.

The Lady Knights upped their record to 8-3 and close out the pre-holiday portion of their schedule with their third game in as many nights against Kerr-Vance of Henderson at home Wednesday evening.

McNair fired in all 18 of her points in the second half. Wall scored 11. Seventh-grader Darcy Dean, who replaced Wall, delivered a key basket in the third quarter. Freshman Jeallen Holland pulled down 10 rebounds.
