Greenfield shot at buzzer misses
A shot at the buzzer to tie the game failed to drop, and the host Greenfield School varsity girls basketball team suffered a 45-43 loss to Grace Christian (7-1) of Sanford on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Knights of the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference stepped into the Thanksgiving break with a 2-3 record. Head coach Bruce Wall’s team tips off conference play Monday against John Paul III of Greenville.
Greenfield saw a 27-14 deficit at halftime widen to 15 points before senior Kaelyn Wall and eighth-grader Serenity McNair triggered its comeback.
The Lady Knights crept within two points on a 3-pointer from point guard McNair, who fouled out in the closing seconds. However, Grace Christian executed a switch on the inbounds play and Anna Baraldi, an NCISAA 1-A All-State performer last season, scored on a layup.
Greenfield again closed the deficit to two points when Wall banked in a shot.
The Lady Knights played tough defense and claimed possession with less than 30 seconds remaining. Wall took his final time-out and a Greenfield shot missed with some 10 seconds remaining.
Greenfield was afforded one last chance with a second left. Jaelyn Holland worked the ball to Wall and, from some 18 feet out, Wall turned and got off an off-target shot.
Wall sparkled with 24 points and 18 rebounds. McNair fired in 11 points.
Baraldi’s 17 points led Grace Christian of the NCISAA 1-A Mid-Carolina Conference, while Leslie Miller canned 14.
