Offense was at a premium during Arendell Parrott’s season opener, but in the end Taylor Creech stepped up.

Creech’s jumper with 21 seconds to play and subsequent steal helped the Patriots defeat Greenfield 34-33 in overtime. Arendell Parrott (1-0) shot just 21.8 percent from the field, but forced 38 Greenfield turnovers in the process, which was enough in head coach Kelly Johnson’s debut.

“The biggest thing was that the girls never gave up,” Johnson said. “They showed a lot of fight and there were a couple of times they could’ve went down, but they didn’t. We have to execute better, but I’ll take a win any way we can get it.”

Greenfield raced out to a 6-1 advantage, but Arendell Parrott started forcing turnovers and holding the Knights without a field goal for more than 12 minutes to offset two droughts. The Patriots missed their first shots before Creech’s bucket midway through the first and another 12 before Darci Basden scored to put Arendell Parrott up 11-7 with 3:33 left in the second. Greenfield closed the half out on a 6-0 run after baskets by Clare Brittle, Kaelyn Wall and Summer Hassen put the Knights back on top.

The Knights would go up 16-11 after Wall’s basket with 6:41 in the third, but wouldn’t score again in the quarter as Arendell Parrott tied the score before back-to-back buckets from Creech put the Patriots up 20-16 with 7:23 to play. Greenfield rallied to tie the game at 22 with 2:30 to go after Wall’s three-point play on a breakaway layup and took the lead on Tara Fulghum’s bucket.

Darci Basden countered with a basket of her own with 41.9 seconds to play and free throws by Colleen Creech and Reagan Perry seemed to be enough. Instead, Wall was fouled with 3.6 seconds left and nailed two free throws to tie the score at 26 and when Colleen Creech’s halfcourt heave clanked off the front iron, the teams went into overtime.

The Knights struck first with a Wall free throw and Avery Vester bucket, but Perry countered with a three-point play to tie the score at 29 with 2:19 to go. Taylor Creech’s free throw 26 seconds later put the Patriots up one, but Vester scored on a putback with 57 seconds left to give the Knights a 31-30 lead. Colleen Creech and Wall traded buckets on ensuing possessions, setting the stage for Taylor Creech’s heroics.

“I was trying to get the best shot I could to help out the team,” Creech said. “It felt great (to see it go in).”

Wall had a game-high 20 points for Greenfield.
