Knights crunch Chargers to rule CPIC again

The number of Coastal Plain Independents Conference varsity boys basketball championships won by Greenfield School is not something Knights head coach Rob Salter knows by heart.
But he knows heart when he sees it and his top-seeded Knights had that in bunches as they stifled No. 2 Wayne Country Day 76-56 to add another CPIC crown to Greenfield’s largesse.
“We made them work for everything,” he said. “To hold that team to 56, as talented as they are, I was very proud of the boys.”
Junior Kyshon Atkinson was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tourney squad by teammates Aaron Murphy, Hampton Evans and Matt Kirby.
“He did a fantastic job defensively, rebounding,” Salter said of Atkinson. “He just made winning plays tonight when he needed to.”
Greenfield, which beat the Chargers for the third straight time after losing to them in the Greenfield Christmas Tournament in December, trailed by three points after one quarter but pulled ahead by six at the half.
“The first half, we were 3 for 12 from the free-throw line and we had a six-point lead so we didn’t feel like we played well on the offensive end,” Salter said. “In the second half, I thought we played well on both ends. ... I thought we made some really good decisions with the ball.”
Murphy led the Knights with 21 points while Atkinson and Kirby each netted 16 points and Evans added 11 points. Atkinson made five steals. Salter also praised junior guard Bryson Wall for his play.
Greenfield, now 25-5, will await its opponent in the NCISAA 1-A playoffs. Salter said the Knights will likely play at home Saturday in the quarterfinals against a foe to be determined. Wayne Country Day (22-7) will do the same for the 2-A playoffs.

WAYNE COUNTRY DAY (56)
Cogdell 13, Cooper 8, Tanner 18, Williams 3, Waller 14.
GREENFIELD (76)
Kirby 16, Atkinson 16, Evans 11, Murphy 21, Wall 6, Austin 4, Sherrod 2.
Score by quarters:
WCD 18 8 15 15 — 56
Greenfield 15 17 23 21 — 76
