GOLDSBORO — Although the relatively young Greenfield School boys cross-country program has a North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A title to call its own, it had not been able to claim ownership of a team title in the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference.
Until Monday.
Senior Will Powell earned most valuable runner honors by winning the individual championship, and Greenfield placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 10 to lay claim to the CPIC crown at Wayne Country Day.
“It gives us big confidence going into states,” Greenfield coach Bruce Wall said. “They needed to see what they were capable of.”
With its roster at full capacity, the Knights seized the top three positions as senior Jeremy Alvarez followed Powell across the line in 20:25. Alex Keen was third in 21 minutes, while Levi Carpenter was fifth at 21:05 in the 31-runner event.
Sophomore R.J. Shealy finished seventh in 21:24, allowing the Knights to grab the team title by a substantial margin ahead of archrival Wayne Country Day and Greenville John Paul II. Greenfield collected 18 points, compared to 45 for the Chargers.
Greenfield will only be required to score four runners at the Oct. 29 NCISAA 1-A championship, but since it competes in a split conference, the 2-A standard of five runners was utilized.
The top 10 runners in each event earned CPIC all-conference honors.
In the girls race, the Lady Knights were paced by all-conference runs from Darcy Dean and Georgia Daniels. Despite not having enough runners to qualify for a team score, Dean continued her strong eighth grade season by crossing the finish line in 24:10. Daniels was fourth for Greenfield in 24:38.
Hannah Best of Wayne Country Day claimed the individual title in 23:39 to pace the 22-runner field.
