From staff reports

The trio of 6-foot-5 juniors Coby White and Elijah McCadden and 6-4 senior Dorieon Suggs combined for 72 points to trigger the Greenfield School varsity boys basketball team to an 82-59 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference victory against visiting Pope John Paul II of Greenville on Wednesday night.

The Knights, unable to practice since last Friday, notched their second conference win without a loss and improved to 13-7 against all foes. Greenfield continues conference play in Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf’s Barney Williamson Gymnasium on Friday night against Community Christian.

Veteran Greenfield head coach Rob Salter described Pope John Paul as a young and much improved team that is going to be formidable in the near future.

“They were scrappy and attacked us,” Salter said. “I liked that. But I liked our approach; we kept pushing tempo, pushing tempo and kind of wore them out in the second half. I also thought we played pretty well defensively.”

And White blistered the nets for 32 points while McCadden and Suggs each poured in 21. White handed out seven assists and Suggs grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Knights led only 20-19 after one quarter but extended the margin to 38-28 at halftime and finally pulled away the final quarter.

“The game was closer than the score indicates,” Salter contended.

Sparking the Lions were Samage Teel with 21 points and Shyquan Jones and Omar Payton with 12 each.
