The host Greenfield School varsity girls basketball team repelled several comeback bid by DASH United’s Skinner sisters and seized their first 2016-17 victory against two losses by a 51-43 margin in the Greenfield School gym Tuesday night.
The Lady Knights of third-year head coach Bruce Wall posted an 8-2 lead after one quarter and relinquished the lead only briefly in the second quarter.
But Emma Skinner, a junior, and Alyse Skinner, a freshman, combined for 28 of United’s 31 second-half points in repeatedly clawing back from deficits as large as 11 points.
DASH (Downeast Association of Sports for Homeschools) departed with a 4-4 record as Emma Skinner drilled in a career-high 18 points, all in the second half. Alyse Skinner canned 14.
United claimed its only lead at 12-11 on Leah Dorsey’s free throw in the second quarter.
However, the Lady Knights closed the first half with an 8-0 spree as freshman Kaelyn Wall connected for three field goals and assisted another to junior Lexie Godwin, who was playing her first game.
In the third quarter, baskets from freshman Claire Brittle and Wall staked Greenfield to its largest lead of 11 points.
However, the Skinner sisters twice rallied United, coached by John Skinner, within two points. Then, in the fourth quarter, United, trailing 32-28 after three quarters, twice pulled within a point.
However, senior Anna Merritt Hauser and Brittle kept Greenfield out front. Then, in the final two minutes, the Knights pulled away on a bucket each from sophomore Sumer Hassan and Wall.
The balanced Greenfield attack featured 12 points from Hassan, 11 from Wall, 10 from Hauser and eight from Brittle.
The Lady Knights thrived inside and on putbacks.
