Lady Chargers hang on to beat Greenfield as season tips off
Posted on November 12, 2021

While it wasn’t a masterpiece from start to finish, the Wilson Christian varsity girls basketball team opened the season with a 41-38 win at Greenfield on Tuesday night.

The Lady Chargers, seeking their third straight North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A title, withstood 30 points from Greenfield sophomore Serenity McNair, who was a North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A all-state choice last season.

“It was sloppy and we played a little skittish,” said Wilson Christian head coach Brian Trull. “We played nervous and turned the ball over 15 times. I wasn’t expecting us to play nervous, but I guess it was just a little bit of first-game jitters. I was proud.”

Gracie Farmer led the Lady Chargers with 12 points, joined in double figures by Jocelyn Bailey with 11 points to go with nine rebounds. Junior Sophia Nesbit corraled 13 rebounds.

Jeallen Holland netted eight points as Greenfield's only other scorer.

The Lady Chargers led for most of the game before Greenfield took the lead in the fourth quarter. Farmer, however, hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, one of just five triples for Wilson Christian on the night, and the Lady Chargers sealed the win with a trio of free throws at the end.

“Defensively, I thought we did very well, even though McNair scored 30,” Trull said. “I would like to see us improve on our defensive rebounding and our offensive efficiency. We weren’t very efficient on offense. We took some shots that I would consider bad shots and some shots that I would just consider OK shots. When we were patient and ran our offense, we looked pretty good. Those possessions were few and far between. So I’d just like to see us be a little more patient, run our offense and I think everything will turn out pretty good as far as the season goes.

“I’ve got to give Greenfield a lot of credit though. Their girls fought hard. They’re a much-improved team from last year. I don’t think we expected to see the kind of effort we got out of them tonight.”

Wilson Christian will be back in action Friday night against Grace Christian, while Greenfield will host Central Carolina Prep.
