Sweet Revenge

The Greenfield School varsity girls basketball team avenged a loss from earlier in the season Monday night with a 45-35 win over DASH United.
The Lady Knights (5-2), a 1-A member of the split 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, lost to DASH, 48-46, on Nov. 27. The girls feel like that loss shouldn’t have happened.
“We shouldn’t have lost the first time, but just a minor mistake,” seventh-grader Serenity McNair said. “We weren’t really into that game, but today we did great distributing the ball and getting it to the middle and the opposite side.”
Greenfield never trailed in the game. Its defense held DASH under double digits in three of the four quarters. The well-run 2-3 zone defense closed all the driving lanes DASH had and made it hard for shooters to find space. The defense helped carry the Lady Knights through what head coach Bruce Wall called a bad shooting night.
“We weren’t shooting the ball well tonight, but our defense and rebounding helped us pull it out,” Coach Wall said. “They (DASH) match up well against us. My young girls, my seventh-graders and my eighth-graders, they stepped up big tonight, and they played good.”
The Lady Knights are made up of mostly middle-schoolers, including starting point guard McNair, who did everything for the team Monday night. She led the top of the 2-3, ran the offense, grabbed rebounds on both ends and scored nine points. Wall said McNair has a very bright future ahead of her.
“I can’t say enough about her,” Wall said. “For her to be able to handle game situations that we put her in, she breaks the defense down with her dribble and creates offense for us when we got a dead set. You can’t coach stuff like that. We’re blessed to have her talent running the point.”
Even with McNair and other young players stepping up, the lone high-schoolers took the cake as they scored 26 of Greenfield’s 45 points. Junior Kaelyn Wall led the team with 14 points, while junior Caroline Stone and senior Sumer Hassan each chipped in six points.
“We just have to make sure everyone is scoring like they need to and working the ball around to everyone,” Kaelyn Wall said. “I have a leadership role that I really have to take responsibly, and we share it with me Caroline and Sumer as the oldest on the team.”
Stone had missed the last few games with an illness. Teammates say it was good to have her back.
“Caroline did really good coming back today from being sick,” Wall said. “She had some really good shots in the game that helped us out a lot.”
