From staff reports

As part of its year-long 50th-anniversary celebration, Greenfield School will induct five individuals and one team as part of its inaugural athletic hall of fame class on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The inductees are Anthony Atkinson, Catherine Thomas Andrews, the late Janet Broadhurst Beaman, Badie Clark III and Ben Forbes as well as the 1989 boys soccer team that won the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship.

Atkinson, a 2003 Greenfield graduate, led the Knights to their first two NCISAA 1-A boys basketball titles before directing Barton College to the 2007 NCAA Division II championship. He has been a member of the Harlem Globetrotters since 2007.

Andrews has had her soccer and basketball jerseys retired at Greenfield. The 1996 graduate scored more than 2,600 points in basketball and is among the all-time leading goal scorers in girls soccer. She is now an attorney in Wilson.

Beaman, who died in March, served as the school’s headmaster for 25 years. She started teaching at Greenfield in 1972 and then became assistant headmaster.

Clark, a 1983 graduate, was a soccer All-American for the Knights before continuing his career at Campbell University. He is currently a pediatrician in Wilmington.

Forbes coached girls and boys soccer for 24 years, with a combined record of 690-275-77. His Knights teams won 12 NCISAA 1-A titles. Forbes directed the Lady Knights to seven state championships.

The 1989 Knights soccer team was the first from Greenfield to win a state championship in soccer. Rick Helms was the head coach while Forbes served as his assistant coach. Forbes’ son, Jack, was a senior member of that Knights team, which also included Ward Boyette, Jon Miller, J.D. Williams, Patrick Bradshaw, Will Sutton, Brian Clayton, Jamie Batts, Brian Bolt, Edmund Waddill, Russell Stone, Chris Dixon, Jim Hussey, Adam Wilhelm, John Farmer, Chris Bolt, Edward Barnes, Stephen Daniels, Michael Collins, Anthony Risko and Robert Alvord.

The induction banquet will be held at 6 p.m. in the Greenfield Cafe, followed by an inductee reception at 8 p.m. Tickets for the event are $50 each and are available from the school.
