Greenfield topples turnover-prone CCS

The difference in experience between the Greenfield School and Community Christian School varsity girls basketball teams played out for all attendees to see Monday night inside Barney Williamson Gymnasium on the campus of Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf.
Greenfield guards Serenity McNair, a seventh grader and Kaelyn Wall, a junior, set the tempo. And without the personnel on the CCS side to test the limited depth of the Lady Knights, Greenfield was free to dictate the pace from wire to wire in a 59-27 victory.
The Lady Knights, 1-A members of the split 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, evened their record at 1-1. CCS, a 1-A team playing out of the split 1-A/2-A Coastal Independents Conference, lost for the first time in three games. The Lady Cyclones entered play averaging 33 points in their two victories.
“We came out here with aggression from the get go,” Greenfield head coach Bruce Wall said. “That’s how we’ve got to play basketball. We saw the court really well tonight, too.”
Wall paced four Greenfield players in double figures, bucketing 15 points. Eighth grader Jeallen Holland and McNair each had 13 with senior Sumer Hassan adding 11. The Lady Knights never trailed, racing out to a 12-0 lead and taking an 18-7 advantage after one quarter. Greenfield stepped up its pressure in the second quarter, picking up a trap as soon as unassertive CCS ball handlers crossed midcourt. The tactic led to six straight turnovers to start the second quarter, and Greenfield opened up a 26-7 cushion.
Second-year CCS head coach Mark Kent noted that in his team’s two victories over Lee Christian and Winterville Christ Covenant, the opponents did not have the personnel to press the Lady Cyclones. However, Greenfield was a different animal altogether. CCS offensive sets often lacked purpose and frequently ended with ill-advised 3-point shots. Sophomore Abby Lenhart led the way with eight points for CCS.
“They have three or four girls who are not new to basketball, so they were familiar with what we were trying to do, and they just played their game,” Kent said. “We couldn’t shake it.”
Greenfield’s largest lead was at 33 points in the fourth quarter.
