Knights thump Thales Academy 4-0 in opener

Four different players put away goals for the Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team Thursday night as the Knights utilized a well-rounded performance to defeat Thales Academy and open its season with a 4-0 victory in the Dr. Robert T. Stone Memorial Showcase on Forbes Field.
Greenfield, a 1-A member of the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference and the 2018 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A runner-up, took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Just three minutes into play, Zeke Ferrell tapped in a shot that the Thales Academy keeper struggled to control off the foot of junior William Smith.
The lead doubled in the 20th minute, with sophomore R.J. Shealy finding Smith down the line. Smith dropped the ball off for junior Sebastian Partida, who beat a defender and supplied an upper-90 finish with the left foot.
Greenfield, which outshot Thales by a 31-8 margin, kept the pressure on before halftime. Zeke Ferrell, a senior, took a shot on goal that caromed off the keeper. That allowed junior Jeremy Alvarez to slam in the rebound for a 3-0 Knights cushion at the half.
Alvarez consumed roughly 50 yards of space in assisting on the final Greenfield tally, beating a quartet of defenders and sending it across the box to Shealy. There, Shealy sent it past the goal line with a left-footed touch.
Greenfield continues play in the Showcase on Friday against Hickory Christian and opposes Neuse Christian on Saturday. The Neuse Christian contest will be a rematch of last year’s 1-A title game, won by the Lions 4-2, also on Forbes Field.
