Greenfield celebrates seniors with sweep of DASH
Special to the Times
Tuesday’s victory against DASH United home school team wasn’t just another win for the Greenfield School varsity volleyball team — it was a Senior Night win.
The Knights only needed three sets to carve a 25-15, 25-15, 26-24 decision and bring their overall record to 9-3.
The Knights’ main objective from the game was to shine a light on their five seniors: Lily Hesse, Lauren Coats, Pauling Ngo, Mia Spagnoletti and Gabrielle Vester.
“Obviously we wanted to get the win tonight but also tonight was all about our seniors,” Knights head coach Jadelyn Castillo said. “I just wanted them all to be on the court at the same time, which usually is not the case because you must be swapping in and out (players). At first, they were a little nervous but once they let the nerves out, they just played their best and I am just so proud of them.”
DASH United started each set ahead of Greenfield and slowed down once the points reached double digits.
United’s season has had many ups and downs, but, said head coach Kristen Skinner, the focus of this season is “definitely to have fun and for them to learn to love the game of volleyball and to learn the more intricate parts of the game and they have really risen to that challenge and that’s exciting to see.”
Vester, who collected 10 kills on the night, has played since she was a freshman at Greenfield. She reflected on her high school volleyball career, which still has three regular-season games and the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs remaining.
“My favorite memories through high school volleyball are when we (seniors) were freshmen and were able to get to be close with the seniors and learn from them,” she said. “And now we are the seniors and are able to get close with the younger teammates and understand how much happiness they bring to the team and how much energy they bring to the team.”
The Greenfield seniors and the rest of the team are now looking to win out the rest of the conference games and to win the state championship.
“I think that this year we have a pretty good chance at winning states, but we still have three more season games left so now we are going to focus on those,” Vester said. “So, it is not over for us, even though it is almost the end of the season. We are still working hard during practice because our goal is to get a state championship this year.”
Greenfield plays at Wayne Christian on Thursday.
