GREENSBORO _ The Greensboro Day boys basketball team will travel to Hawaii in December to play in the Iolani Classic. It will be the second appearance in the event for the Bengals, who participatedin 1995. Coach Freddy Johnson’s team accepted the invitation last week to return to the event.
Also in the 16-team field are national powerhouses Montverde (Fla.) Academy and Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O’Dowd.
“We were in Augusta watching some of our kids play (at the Nike Peach Jam) and we were approached about playing in the tournament,” Johnson said. “It took about a month for everything to work out.
“We’re really excited to btake a trip like that with the kids. They’ll have a wonderful time.” Greensboro Day will leave for Honolulu either late Dec. 14 or early Dec. 15 and play the first of its four games in Hawaii on Saturday, Dec. 16.
The Bengals then return Dec. 21 and have a few days off before they begin play in the annual HAECO Invitational on Dec. 26 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
