Chargers end slide, start year with win

ROANOKE RAPIDS — After two wins in its first 12 games, the Wilson Christian varsity boys basketball team started 2020 in winning fashion with 65-54 nonconference triumph at Halifax Academy.

It was the second win for the Chargers (3-10) over the Vikings this season, including a 58-44 victory Nov. 21 at Wilson Christian. The victory halted a six-game slide for the Chargers.

Wilson Christian, playing without leading scorer and senior captain Harrison Parker, erupted for 21 points in the second quarter to take a 33-20 halftime lead that the Chargers would not relinquish. Sophomore Deston Melvin led WCA with 19 points while junior Spencer Parker tossed in 14 points and junior Seth Thompson added 13 points.

The Vikings (2-10) were led by senior Eli Harris with 19 points.

The Chargers hit the road again Monday against Fellowship Baptist Academy of Durham.
