HALIFAX ACADEMY 71, KERR-VANCE 63
The Spartans (11-7, 4-4) dropped an important 1A Carolina Independent Conference matchup at Halifax Academy (12-2) Friday evening, falling to the Vikings in a hard-fought contest. Kerr-Vance defeated Halifax 57-43 when the two squads met in Henderson earlier this season, but the Spartans couldn’t quite complete the season sweep.
The first quarter was very fast paced and the Spartans had to deal with some early foul trouble in the first few minutes of action. The Spartans’ leading scorer, Michael Bowers (28 pts), picked up two fouls in the first four minutes of play, allowing Halifax to build a 20-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
Bowers was called for his third foul midway through the second quarter, causing the Spartans to have a major scoring drought as the Vikings took a 38-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Spartans fought back after the break, ultimately cutting Halifax’s advantage down to five points midway through the third quarter. The Vikings answered the call in what turned out to be an intense period, however, battling back to take a 54-41 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Kerr-Vance refused to give up despite trailing by 15 points with just under six minutes left in regulation. Foul trouble continued to hamper the Spartans though, with Wil Short picking up his fifth with six minutes left in the contest.
The Spartans trimmed the Vikings’ lead down to seven points with just over a minute left, but couldn’t get any closer despite multiple opportunities. Bowers also picked up his fifth foul in the last minute of the game. Along with Bowers, Colby Wilkerson (17 pts) and Ronnie Brodie (11 pts) also performed well on the offensive end for Kerr-Vance.
Spartans’ head coach Taron Downey expressed disappointment with his team’s defensive effort, especially considering Kerr-Vance’s excellent defensive play during their first two games of the week.
“We have to be better on defense collectively, especially on the road,” Downey said.
The Spartans (11-7, 4-4) will return to action when they host St. Thomas More in a critical conference matchup Tuesda
