For three quarters, the Harrells Christian Academy and Cape Fear Academy girls basketball teams were evenly match.
With its their top two scorers on the bench with injuries, the Hurricanes were unable to hang around, allowing the Crusaders to secure a 47-36 road win.
Virginia Tech signee Sierra Votaw scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the final eight minutes -- including four straight baskets to open the period -- to put the Crusaders (11-6, 4-2 Coastal Rivers) up by double digits.
“Coach drew up a new play for us,” said Votaw, who was 3 of 13 from the field through three quarters. “I made the three and I guess I caught fire. The shots started to drop.”
CFA (11-5, 2-2), already short-handed due to leading scorer Chloe Kernan’s ankle injury, lost another top performer when Kaia Simpson went down early in the second quarter with a knee injury. She was unable to return.
“Our girls struggled early offensively, but we got it together in the second half,” Harrells coach Wayne Cannady said. “A lot of it was because of (CFA’s) defense. They played hard.”
The Hurricanes were led by Alexa Borstad, who finished with 12 points before fouling out in late in the third quarter.
