HPCA Cruises To Two Big Victories

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian showed few signs of letting up, despite one of its best players being out.The Cougars, without standout KJ Garrett due to a minor injury during the week, built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and weathered the ebbs and flows of the game to beat Caldwell 88-64 in NCISAA Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference boys basketball Friday night at HPCA.

In the girls game, the Cougars scored the first 20 points of the second quarter to break free and cruised past the Eagles 49-35.

Landon Sutton scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the HPCA boys (13-13 overall, 6-2 con-ference), which used a 12-3 run to end the first quarter with a 19-9 lead and led by as many as 16 points in the second before going into half-time ahead 37-29.PJ Underhill added 15 points and nine rebounds followed by Jackson Powell with 12 points and nine rebounds and Drake Carrick with 11 points and eight rebounds. David Butler also scored 11 points as the Cougars withstood Caldwell’s run within four early in the third to lead by 12 heading to the fourth.

HPCA — which is second in the conference behind Greensboro Day but ahead of a two-way tie between Calvary Day and Forsyth Country Day — extended its lead to 20 twice midway through the final quarter before peaking at 24 in the last minute.Payne Bradley scored 27 points to lead Caldwell (5-19, 0-9), followed by Alex Raley and Josh Childers with 16 points apiece.
