Hines set to lead Arendell Parrott’s boys’ basketball team

The 2017-18 high school basketball season is still two months away, but Arendell Parrott’s new head coach is making strides already.

Dory Hines was selected over the summer as the Patriots’ new leader after spending three years as an assistant coach.

Hines was a Kinston High School and Mount Olive stalwart, helping the Vikings win a pair of state championships in 2008 and 2010 before becoming a two-time all-Carolina Conference selection for the Trojans.

Hines, the all-time assist leader at Mount Olive and the only Trojan to record a triple-double, said he’s wanted to get into coaching after college. He added that he’s hit the ground running early, trying to implement what he’s learned in the high school and collegiate level.

“I was really excited about the opportunity,” Hines said. “I knew this was something I’ve always wanted to do and being so young (at 25) it came quicker than I thought. I’m prepared for it and I’ve been working on it.

“(At Kinston and Mount Olive) I learned great teams have great teammates. You’ve got to love when your teammates are doing something good and when they make shots. Guys have to want assists, play together, communicate, maintain a good locker room and work hard. These guys have been doing a lot of the little things this summer and I’ve been in the gym with them. They’re really excited and have wanted to work hard this season.”

Arendell Parrott Athletic Director Matt Beaman said Hines has made numerous strides since joining the Patriots in 2015 as an assistant basketball coach and defensive coordinator for football. Beaman, who is the football head coach, said Hines has been an integral part of the team winning state titles in 2015 and 2016 on the gridiron and it should translate to the basketball court.

“I think Dory came in and you saw the potential immediately,” Beaman said. “Since he’s been here he’s exceeded expectations and he’s proved this is where he wants to be. He buys into the Parrott philosophy and is all about the student-athlete. He’s taking the kids we have, and turning them into great basketball players and young men. I think Coach Hines is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the state and we’re glad to have him. I think you’ll see more of a toughness from our guys — they won’t get pushed around or punked on the court. There will be a defensive mentality our guys will have you’ll see on the court, and it will make a difference.”

Hines said he believes the team’s hard work in the offseason will pay off.

“We’re going to try to get up and down,” Hines said. “We’re going to be really small, so we’ll try to take strides and play as a team. We’ll try to have fun and let wins and losses accumulate.”
