HPCA works overtime to beat T.W. Andrews

HIGH POINT — Talk about a day after Christmas classic.High Point Christian Academy defeated T.W. Andrews, 78-74, in an overtime barn burner in the first game of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Classic at Southwest Guilford High School on Thursday afternoon.
HPCA trailed by as many as nine points in the game but battled back to take its first lead late in the third quarter, then got a clutch game-tying 3-pointer from Drake Carrick with nine seconds to play to force overtime at 62-62.
“I really liked our ability to respond,” HPCA head coach Joseph Cooper said.
“Obviously we had the slow start to begin the game, but I really thought we turned up in the second half and made some adjustments.”
Senior Landon Sutton led HPCA with 28 points. Junior KJ Garrett finished with 22 points. For Andrews, Ty East scored a game-high 28 points.HPCA advances to play host Southwest Guilford in today’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal in Coggins Gym. Andrews faces Southern Guilford in today’s 3 p.m. consolation round game in the Annex Gym.
“(This win) gets us headed in the right direction,” Cooper said. “Coming back from Christmas break, you never know what you got. But it is nice to be back and head-ed in the right direction.”
Andrews started the game on a quick 7-2 run. After trailing 11-4, the Cougars hit two quick buckets to cut the lead to three. The Red Raiders answered with two bas-kets to make the score 15-8.HPCA responded with a 7-2 run to make the score 17-15 and force Andrews to call a timeout.
The teams traded baskets over the next few possessions, which kept the lead at two. Then Andrews forced turnovers on three straight possessions to take a 24-19 lead.HPCA made four three throws to bring the game back within one point, but then Andrews knocked down a 3-pointer and a layup to give themselves at 29-23 lead over HPCA at halftime.
After the Cougars cut the lead back to three points again, the Red Raiders answered with two straight buckets to take a 35-28 lead.Once again, the teams traded buckets until Andrews went on a 7-0 run to take a 45-38 lead over HPCA heading into the fourth quarter.Right off the bat, Andrews hit another quick layup to extend the lead to nine points over the Cougars.HPCA did not goaway,answering with an 8-0 run that consisted of a layup, a steal, four free throws off of a technical and personal foul, and then a 3-pointer. The run brought the Cougars back within one point.
Andrews made four free throws to lead 51-46.HPCA roared back with seven straight points to grab its first lead of the game at 53-51.Andrews stormed back to lead 62-59 with under 20 seconds left to play.HPCA answered with Carrick’s 3-pointer to tie things at 62 apiece and send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, HPCA took a quick 64-62 lead with a layup, then Andrews went on a 5-0 run to take a 69-65 lead.The Cougars answered with two quick buckets to make the score 69-67.Both teams traded baskets to make the score 72-69 HPCA. Then the Cougars forced a turnover and knocked down two free throws to up the lead to five at 74-69.Andrews knocked down a 3 to make it a one-possession game at 74-72.But HPCA iced the game with clutch free throw shooting and advanced to the second round with the four-point win
