HIGH POINT — High Point Christian was right there with Lake Norman Christian, but a second-half lull proved costly.
The Cougars started strong and were still within reach at halftime, but a big third-quarter run put them in a hole they couldn’t climb out of in falling 75-54 in NCISAA nonconference boys basketball Saturday afternoon at HPCA.
In the girls game, High Point Christian cruised to a 73-17 victory and remained undefeated.
“We played a real good first half,” Cougars coach Joseph Cooper said. “Really, that third-quarter run was tough. We stopped doing what got us into a good spot. Our offense got a little stagnant, we stopped moving the ball and started turning it over — I think we had six turnovers in the third quarter. That’s not a recipe for success.”
K.J. Garrett — playing particularly well in the first half — scored 22 points to lead HPCA (12-7), ranked No. 2 among NCISAA 3A teams. Isaiah Sanders added 14 points, followed by Thomas McIntosh with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars opened up a six-point lead in the first quarter, led 18-15 after one quarter and were tied with the Ospreys with three minutes left in the half.
Lake Norman Christian used a 7-0 spurt to help lead 34-29 into halftime. The Ospreys — featuring highly touted recruit Mikey Williams — scored the first five points of the third to lead by 10.
Then, later in the quarter, they scored 15 straight points to lead by 22 with 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
HPCA struggled with misses and a couple turnovers, and suddenly the game was out of reach. Lake Norman Christian kept its lead around the 20-point margin the rest of the game, pushing it to 23 inside the final minute.
“I think it’s partly fatigue,” Cooper said. “We have a lot of guys who are playing some heavy minutes. And then we’re still getting accustomed to it. Like I said (Friday following the win against Westchester), we’re still trying to put 32 minutes together. Once we do that I think we’ll be in good shape, but we still have to figure that out.”
Trey Green and AJ Allenspach each scored 15 points for the Ospreys (13-4), ranked No. 10 in the state overall by MaxPreps and No. 1 among NCISAA 1A teams. Williams followed with 14 points.
