High Point Christian rallies past Calvary
By GREER SMITH SPECIAL TO THE ENTERPRISE
HIGH POINT — KJ Garrett, Isaiah Sanders and Ethan Smith combined for 39 points in the second half as High Point Christian’s boys rallied from as many as 18 behind on Senior Night to defeat Calvary Day 73-69 on Friday.
HPCA’s girls dominated throughout despite not having two starters available and cruised to a 69-23 victory to remain unbeaten and clinch at least a share of the Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference regular-season championship.
BOYS GAME
Garrett scored 23, Smith 18 and Sanders 16 for the game as the host Cougars improved to 14-7, 5-2 as they clinched at least a tie for second place with two games remaining and avenged an overtime loss at Calvary earlier this season.
Down 18 in the second quarter, HPCA cut the margin to 15 at the half and 59-50 at the end of the third quarter.
HPCA, which rallied on the strength of a more aggressive defense, then started the fourth quarter red hot, taking the lead for the first time at 62-61 and then extending the run to 14-2 to lead 64-61 on Sanders’ layup with 3:36 to go.
Garrett started the streak with two layups and two free throws. After PJ Underhill provided a free throw, Smith hit a 3 and then drove for a layup for a 62-61 lead.
Calvary fought back with James Wilkins III’s three-point play that capped his 31 points and went up 67-64 on Zech Gibson’s 3 with 2:54 left. HPCA regained the lead 68-67 on Garrett’s free throw with 1:09 left. Sanders’ layup after a Calvary turnover made the margin 70-67, and Garrett added a free throw with 29 second to go to move the leaf to four.
Francesco Robello’s tip, after an errant shot was saved from going out-of-bounds made it 71-69 with nine seconds left but Smith sealed the victory with two free throws three second later.
