HIGH POINT — The High Point Christian Academy girls basketball team defeated Westchester Country Day School, 48-30, in game one of a doubleheader at Westchester on Friday night.In game two, the Cougars boys emerged victorious over the Wildcats, 91-72.
Facing off for the first time since Dec. 11, 2012, the Cougar girls (2-4, 1-0 PiedmontTriad Athletic Conference) started the game on a 12-0 run, holding the Wildcats (1-7, 0-2 Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference) to a single 3-pointer for the first quarter.
The Wildcats gained some momentum in the second quarter, starting out on an 8-0 run of their own en route to a total of 12 points, bringing the game to a 19-15 score at the half.
The Cougars took command in the second half, knocking down all of their points without the benefit of a free throw to silence the Wildcats for good.
“Today we extended the defense a little bit,” Cougars head coach Sam Beasley said. “We’re just trying to be vreally aggressive and deny as many passes as we can.” Skyler Talbert and Logan Holland led the Cougars with 13 points apiece. For the Wildcats, Madison Conner led the team with 12 points, five of those via free throws. She also recorded six steals.
“They’re improving every game,” Wildcats head coach Mary Ann Ross said of her team’s performance. “We had two girls out tonight so it was a little more difficult but I love the way they played team ball.”
The Cougars victory marked the first time they have defeated the Wildcats since a 52-42 win on Jan. 21, 2012.
