Six Observer-area teams will begin the 2016-17 high school basketball season at a national showcase event in Greensboro.
Concord’s Cannon School, Charlotte Christian, Providence Day, United Faith, York Prep and Liberty Heights will play in the Phenom Hoops National Showcase on Friday and Saturday. The event will be at Greensboro Day School. Tickets are $15 daily.
The tournament will feature DICKS’ National champion Oak Hill (Va.) and will be streamed live on FloHoops. It will feature 13 players who have commmitted to Division I schools and more than 40 who have Division I offers.
On Thursday, MaxPreps listed the event as one of the nation’s best showcase high school tournaments. Two local events also made the list: the Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Rocky River High (Nov. 25-26) and the Hoodies House National High School Hoops Classic at Providence Day (Dec. 28-30).
Providence Day – which won the N.C. Independent Schools state title, the Observer’s Sweet 16 and played in the DICKS National tournament in New York last season – will make its season debut. The Chargers will play in the late featured game both nights: against Virginia’s Bishop Sullivan on Friday at 9, and against Greenfield School and junior North Carolina recruit Coby White on Saturday at 5:30.
Charlotte Christian, expected to challenge for the CISAA title, will play 22 Feet Academy (S.C.) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Rock Hill’s York Prep will play 22 Feet on Friday at 4:30 and private school power Greensboro Day on Saturday at 4 p.m.
United Faith and new coach Josh Coley will play Wesley Christian (Ky.) on Friday at 7:30. Concord’s Cannon School will play Oak Hill on Saturday at 2:30, and Charlotte’s Liberty Heights Athletic Institute, which was founded last spring, will play Legacy Charter (S.C.) on Saturday at 10 a.m.
