Big runs in both contests turned out to be the difference for Arendell Parrott and John Paul II.
In the boys’ game, the Saints took advantage of some cold Patriots shooting in the second quarter to pick up a 68-58 victory. JPII (5-3) broke the game open early in the second and never trailed again, although APA (2-4) had one final run in the fourth.
The teams had seven ties and seven lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the contest. A basket from Tomir Moore gave the Patriots a 21-20 advantage with 6:13 to go in the second, but Jude Wisman-Raven’s subsequent 3-pointer triggered a 12-0 run for the Saints. JPII led 33-24 at halftime and kept the momentum in the third — a basket from Tyler Nelson with 3:30 left in the third gave the Saints their largest lead at 48-28.
The Patriots shot 6 of 36 from beyond the arc, including 0 for 11 in the second and third quarter. APA started to make a run in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to within 62-57 after a pair of free throws from Cole Evans. Ultimately, it wouldn’t be enough.
“We played a bad second and third quarter, but gave ourselves a chance to fight back in the fourth,” APA coach Clay Harrell said. “We dug too big of a hole and I think we took this team for granted. We’ll learn from this game, we play them again in January and we’ll be ready.”
