KVA stays strong with win over Faith Christian

HENDERSON — Efficient performance from Kerr-Vance Academy on both offense and defense proved to be crucial in the team securing a 67-58 victory over Faith Christian at home on Thursday evening.
Head coach Brandon Dickerson has been impressed with the adjustments his players have made during recent games and is confident that they can string together more wins in future conference games.
“I thought we played really well,” Dickerson said. “Our practices have been really good the last week and a half. We’ve worked on communication and bringing energy all the time, and I thought that really showed tonight.”
KVA tried to disrupt Faith Christian with a full-court press during the opening minutes of the first quarter. The plan initially worked to perfection, with KVA pulling out to a 10-point lead, but Faith Christian persevered and managed to tie the game at 16-16 heading into the second quarter.
After both teams put up quick buckets to open the quarter, they each fell victim to missed opportunities that kept the score low. Consistency at the free-throw line kept the Spartans in front, and a late scoring run enabled the team to enter the intermission up 34-29.
A strong start to the second half from senior Joel Lewis strengthened KVA’s grip on the lead, all while he and his teammates continued to lock down Faith Christian with stellar defense. Unlike the first quarter, Faith Christian had no proper response to their opponent’s defense and fell behind by 14 points.
The visitors tried to get back in contention by full-court pressing KVA during the fourth quarter, but several lapses on both sides of the ball were enough for the Spartans to put the game away in the closing minutes and come away with a 67-58 win.
Lewis, who had a quiet first half, led his team in scoring with 18 points, while fellow senior Chance Murphy was second in that category with 13 points. Senior Michael Holtzman did most of his scoring in the first half by tallying 10 points, while junior Jay-Quan Pierce came off the bench to score 11.
Dickerson said his team excelled in playing at its own pace and controlling the entire game, and he hopes that his players keep embracing what he teaches in practice so they can repeat performances like the one against Faith Christian.
“We definitely have to be more consistent,” Dickerson said. “I thought we had really good energy on Tuesday night and if we can be consistent with that, then we can do whatever we want to do. The main thing is to make the main thing the main thing, and our main thing is E.A.T., which stands for effort, attitude and teammate.”
Now 4-1 on the season, KVA will stay at home for its next contest, against Lighthouse Christian HomeSchool today at 12:30 p.m.
