The Spartans (13-8, 6-4) hosted 1A Carolina Independent Conference foe Epiphany (2-10, 1-5) at the Crawford Gymtorium Friday evening, picking up a key victory on their Senior Night.
Kerr-Vance honored its six seniors — Tommy Alicardi, Ronnie Brodie, Banks Conde,Drew Griggs, Austin Mattingly and Jabe Montgomery — before the contest. All of the seniors started the game with the exception of Banks Conde, who was still recovering from a recent illness.
The Spartans started out slow with an all-senior lineup, holding onto a slim 10-8 lead after the first eight minutes of action. Kerr-Vance head coach Taron Downey had faith in his seniors though, playing them for the entire first quarter.
The Spartans’ of fense found its rhythm in the second as Downey began to substitute liberally, eventually taking a 30-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. Kerr- Vance continued to expand its lead after the break, leading by as many as 16 points at one point before Epiphany scrapped its way back into the game late in the fourth quarter.
“A win is a win,” Downey said. “We were not as honed in on defense as we should have been. Part of it was a chemistry thing, with different folks playing different roles on Senior Night. The effort was there and any time you can get a win against a conference foe, you take it and move on.”
Michael Bowers once again led the Spartans with 24 points on the night, Brodie (12 pts, 4 reb) and Colby Wilkerson (8 pts, 4 reb, 4 stl) both played vital roles for Kerr-Vance. Wil Short (7 pts), Mattingly (7 pts), Griggs (4 reb, 1 stl, 1 ast), Beau Nutter (2 pts) and Alicardi (2 reb) also performed well for the Spartans.
The Spartans will return to action when they travel to face Henderson Collegiate in a non-conference matchup at the Aycock Recreation Center Tuesday evening.
