Davidson Day 38, Charlotte Latin 36

In a game that saw five lead changes in the second half, Davidson Day’s Jeremy Silinski kicked a 24-yard field goal on the final play to cap a dramatic 38-36 victory over Charlotte Latin at Patten Stadium Friday night.
Latin led 20-7 at the half, but Davidson Day scored twice in the third to take a 21-20 lead entering the fourth. Then things got crazy.
Latin took a 30-21 lead after a field goal and a Demarkes Stradford 40-yard scoring run in the first three minutes of the quarter.
Davidson Day then cut into the lead when Cade Carney caught a pass over the middle and went 49 yards untouched for a score with 6:20 left. After a Latin punt, Carney capped a 55-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run and the Patriots led 35-30 with 2:53 left.
But Latin’s Melvin Rouse returned the kickoff all the way to the Davidson Day 28, and Stradford scored from 2 yards out with 1:01 left. Davidson Day took over at its own 28, but Sam Hartman completed four throws to get his team into field goal range. Silinski then hit the game-winner to keep Davidson Day unbeaten on the season.
Quote: “That was a great high school football game,” Davidson Day coach Chad Grier said. “We talk to the kids all the time about playing every play until the last one, and tonight I think that work paid off.”
Records: Davidson Day stays undefeated at 8-0 while Latin drops to 5-3.
Worth mentioning: Cade Carney was unbelievable for Davidson Day, rushing for 110 yards and two touchdowns and catching six passes for 100 yards and a score. He added a 46-yard pass for a touchdown and returned a punt in the first half for 39 yards and a fifth touchdown.
For Latin, Stradford ran for 123 yards and three touchdowns while quarterback Bates Jones threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns.
Grier is a Latin alum and played for Latin’s coach Larry McNulty and cares deeply for his mentor. “This game is miserable for me,” Grier said. “Coach (McNulty) is family to me and has done so much for me that it’s tough to go up against him.”
Early in the first quarter, Davidson Day lineman Thomas Penuel was carted off with what appeared to be a broken ankle. Players for both teams came on the field as he was leaving to offer support.
What’s Next: Davidson Day will travel to Georgia to play Rabun Gap-Nacoochee while Latin will go to Columbia to face Grace Christian.
